Why wait?
You went to a conference today and met a few investors. It’s now night time, and you are going over the business cards you received during the day.
Are you contacting those investors now? I mean, right now! Why not?

Bill Gross founded several startups, incubated a few others and invested in a lot. His conclusion on why startups succeed or fail is one reason: timing.

But while you can’t make sure the timing will be right, you can make sure the timing will be wrong. By waiting, you are increasing the chances timing won’t be right.

First, lets start by understanding how fast is “fast response”. In the past, I have had emails sent to me within an hour of meeting a startup, with all the information about the startup including a link to their web site and a login to the service. This is “fast” (but not “too fast”). Can you act that fast? If you can, you will already have advantage over everyone else. This type of fast is impressive.

If you wait and respond a day later, you are already “not fast enough”. By the next day, I may have met another startup and got excited by their technology. Maybe unlike you, they have sent me all the information immediately and I’m now reviewing it. By the time I get yours, it is “old news”.

For many reasons, excitement from an idea decays like radioactive matter. It drops quickly in a short time. Every day we get hundreds of emails, dozens of direct messages via facebook, twitter, whatsup and Kakao talk. With the ability to multi-task, at any given time we are doing several half-done tasks, ready to drop them all when a new and more exciting task comes in.

If you successfully engaged a customer, investor or partner – you got them to drop most other tasks and give you attention. Your window of opportunity is open, but not for long; soon some other exciting task will come in and make them drop yours. You will then have to work much harder to climb back into being a high priority task.

You may be waiting because you want to strategize on a better answer; or maybe you feel your product is not ready yet to be demo’ed. Or you want to polish your slides a bit longer. But what you’re really doing is sending a bad signal to a smart investor: you are telling them that you can’t move fast, that you can’t make quick decisions and that you prefer to do nothing than to take a chance with a partial solution.

Of course, not all investors will be so sensitive, but you want the smart investors, don’t you?

You also take the chance that by the time they receive the information, their memory (and excitement) fades. For you, an investment is a one-in-a-lifetime deal; for a typical investor it’s a decision they have to take once a week. They won’t mind passing on the deal if something feels wrong – by waiting, you are increasing the chance of that happening.

If you believe Bill Gross and think timing is crucial, you should keep in mind that the best timing is almost always “now”. A quick reply, even if it’s not perfect, is better than a perfect reply that comes too late. In today’s world, “too late” can be 48 hours later. Be quick!

Here’s a simple exercise: stop reading this column (but please come back to it afterwards) and go over all the business cards that you have received in the last 30 days. For every such business card, if you haven’t been in touch with that person since you have received the business card, send them an email now. I mean now! If it’s the middle of the night, do it now.

f it’s weekend or a holiday, do it now. If you think the person is out of the country, do it now. If they are too senior, or too junior, do it anyway. There’s no excuse for not following up quickly, with anybody.

What to follow up with is less important than the act of following up.

If you were supposed to send them material and it is not yet ready, let them know you are working on the material; if you did not have any action item from the meeting, try to set action items (for them, or for you) for next steps to move the relationship forward; if you have nothing to tell them, just thank them for the meeting and tell them you are available for them.

Just reminding people that you exist may open new opportunities you would have missed otherwise; but most important – there is absolutely no downside in doing so. The only timing that is wrong is “too late”.
