True to his looks, Wemade Entertainment CEO Namgoong Hun is a man of perseverance and drive. He loved games from his university days and he has been carving a path for himself in the industry since then. Perhaps that is why I started to think that he is really cool. And recently, I felt that way away when I met him again. As we chatted, I was suddenly reminded of the time when I met him in 2005 when he was the Director of Games in NHN and how he shared with him his past, his dreams and what he wanted to do.
Originally, I was interested in another industry. The following is the reason. When CEO Namgoong left his position as the CEO of Games in CJ E&M, he rested for a year. When I heard that he has taken up the position as CEO of Wemade Entertainment this spring, I was a little surprised and taken aback. I started to wonder if he wanted to find something else that he wanted to do and to work hard at it. I was curious on why he decided to come back to work and what plans he has for the future. The conversation started from an unexpected topic.
I am attending school recently
CEO Namgoong: ‘I have been attending school these days.’ The conversation started this way.
‘School? To conduct lectures?’
‘No. I go there to study.’
CEO Namgoong is attending classes at Sogang University, doing a postgraduate degree on Education Administration. He originally graduated from Sogang University’s Business faculty and it is like returning to his alma mater. Why did he return to school?
‘My childhood dream was to become a teacher. It seems strange if I decided to be a teacher now so I want to set up a school. In order to do so, I need to learn about education administration and this is why I have decided to do a postgraduate degree.’
Namgoong shared that he has been thinking of setting up a school ever since he quit his job at CJ E&M. It was always busy at CJ E&M, where issues will crop up at one go and he did not get any rest at all. This is a chance for him to rest and re-charge.
I was suddenly reminded that Namgoong had mentioned that he wanted to be a teacher during an interview for the book ‘The secret behind Naver’s success legend’. After enrolling in university, Namgoong did a wide range of work, including driving a taxi, being a tourist guide, setting up a game venture and working in an American branch. But all these while, he never truly let go of his dream to become a teacher.
Namgoong wanted to set up a high school. And not just a normal high school, but a school related to games. He wanted to set up a school to cultivate talents in the game industry. When he was in CJ, he was passionate about cultivating new talents. He is now transferring that passion to setting up a high school. There was a need to at least understand how school works in order to set up one and this was his reason for going back to study.
‘I didn’t realize what a blessing it is to be working with good people. There are many companies who lack good talent. This is especially so in the games industry. It is possible for youths to start learning about the professional knowledge in the industry from high school. If I set up such a school, I’ll be helping to develop new talents and also fulfill my dream as a teacher.’
I can’t control myself when I see an awesome game.
Of course, setting up a high school is not currently his top priority. This is because he has returned to the industry as Wemade Entertainment’s CEO. I was curious why he decided to return to the industry at this time.
‘I am not too sure too. I was concentrating on my plans for the school but it all changed when I met up with Park kwan Ho and Kim Nam Cheol and they showed me a game.’
The game that Park showed him was Viking Island. After Namgoong saw the game, it ignited his passion once more. And thus he approached Park, asking him to sell the game to him.
Upon hearing that, Park’s answer was: ‘why not come join our company and let’s do this together.’
This was how Namgoong came to join Wemade Entertainment. This was how he became even closer to Kim Beom Soo, chairman of Kakao’s board of directors, who was also his partner in founding Hangames. It was a new experience for the both of them.
In 2009, I had the opportunity to meet CEO Namgoong in Irvine, California, when he was the CEO of NHN USA. At the time, he talked about smartphone games. ‘There will be a huge market for mobile games that follow people’s mobile path as they move about. There will also be applications in the health industry and this is something that I want to try some time.’
It was the right timing that Park showed Namgoong the game. It is impossible for one to give up the chance to do something that he has been wanting to work on for a long time.
‘My first job was in Samsung SDS and at that time Unitel, CHOI and Hitel etc were competing in PC communications. However, soon the competition became meaningless. As the Internet arrived, there is no market left for PC communications. There were more netizens than those who were using PC communications. Now, there are more smartphone users compared to netizens. I predict that the mobile market might even overtake the PC internet market soon.’
It seems important to CEO Namgoong to grab a share in the mobile industry and age. Although Namgoong has benefited much from the PC age, he found new possibilities in the mobile age. You can call that fate and it’s a huge opportunity.
[#M_Click here to view the original article in Korean|Hide |남궁훈 위메이드엔터테인먼트 대표는 외모에 걸맞는 뚝심과 추진력을 가진 인물이다. 그의 지난날이 말해준다. 아주 순수한 마음과 열정을 갖고 있기도 하다. 대학에 다닐 때부터 게임을 좋아했고 그쪽 한 분야에서 계속 자신의 길을 만들어왔다. 그래서일까. 언젠가부터 그가 멋있다는 생각을 하기 시작했다. 최근에 그를 만나면서 그런 생각을 다시 한번 확인했다. 그와 만나 이야기를 나누다보니 2005년 당시 NHN에서 한게임 본부장을 하고 있던 그를 처음 봤을 때 그가 말했던 자신의 이야기, 어렸을 때의 꿈, 하고 싶은 일에 대한 생각 등이 다시 떠올랐다.
원래 나의 관심사는 좀 다른 곳에 있었다. 다른 생각을 하고 있었던 이유는 이렇다. 남궁 대표는 지난해 CJ E&M 게임 부문 대표를 하다가 그만둔 뒤 1년 동안 조용히(?) 지냈다. 그러던 그가 올 봄 위메이드엔터테인먼트 대표로 복귀했다는 소식을 들었을 때 한편으론 약간 의외라는 생각이 들었다. 왠지 하고 싶은 다른 일을 찾아서 열심히 하고 있는 게 아니었을까 하는 생각을 했기 때문이었다. 그래서 그를 만나면 왜 복귀했는지, 어떤 계획을 갖고 있는지 등을 듣고 싶었다. 그가 예전에 말했던 자신의 오래된 소망에 대한 생각은 하지 못했다. 대화는 뜻밖의 지점에서 시작됐다.
◆요즘 학교 다닙니다
“요즘에 학교 다닙니다” 대화의 시작은 학교였다.
“학교? 강의하러 가시나요?”
“아뇨 공부하러 다닙니다”
남궁훈 대표는 서강대 교육행정학과 대학원에 다니고 있었다. 올해 처음으로 시작했단다. 서강대 경영학과를 졸업하고 오랜 시간이 흘러 모교로 복귀한 셈이다. 학교는 왜 갔을까.
“제가 어릴때부터 선생님이 꿈이었쟎아요. 선생님이 되기엔 지금은 좀 그런 것 같고 학교를 설립하려구요. 학교를 세우려면 교육행정을 좀 알아야할 것 같아 대학원을 다니기 시작했습니다.”
지난해 CJ E&M 게임 부문 대표를 그만두고 나왔을 때부터 장기 계획으로 학교를 만들 생각을 했다고 한다. 모교로 복귀할 계획도 세우고 전공도 정했다. CJ에 있을 때 너무 많은 이슈가 한꺼번에 터져 거의 쉬지를 못했는데, 재충전의 좋은 기회라는 생각도 한 듯 하다.
그의 말을 듣고보니 예전에 ‘네이버 성공신화의 비밀’ 책을 쓰기 위해 인터뷰를 할 때 선생님이 되는 게 꿈이었다는 이야기를 들었던 기억이 났다. 남궁 대표는 대학에 입학한 뒤 택시 운전도 하고 해외 여행 가이드도 하고 한게임을 창업하고 미국 법인에 나가있기도 하는 등 다양한 일을 해 왔지만 선생님에 대한 꿈을 내려놓지 않은 것 같다.
그가 세우고 싶은 학교는 고등학교. 그것도 게임 관련 학교다. 게임 인력을 양성하는 학교를 만들고 싶단다. CJ에 있을 때 그는 유독 좋은 인재 확보에 대한 강한 애착을 드러냈다. 그 애착이 이제는 게임 학교 설립으로 옮겨간 거다. 게임 학교를 설립하려면 최소한 학교 행정에 대해선 알아야 할 것 같아 공부를 더 하기로 했다.
“좋은 사람들하고 같이 일한다는 게 얼마나 복인지 예전엔 몰랐습니다. 전문성을 가진 훌륭한 인재에 목마른 회사들이 많을 겁니다. 특히 게임회사의 경우 더 그럴 겁니다. 고등학교에서부터 전문적인 지식을 충분히 배울 수 있습니다. 그런 학교를 만들어 게임산업을 더 키우는 데 보탬도 되고 제 꿈도 이루고 그러면 좋죠. 하하”
◆너무 좋은 게임을 보고 참을 수 없었죠
물론 지금 당장 게임 학교를 설립하는 게 그의 가장 시급한 과제는 아니다. 위메이드엔터테인먼트 대표로 게임업계에 복귀했기 때문이다. 이쯤에서 어쩌다 다시 게임업계에 복귀했는지 물어볼 만하다.
“저도 몰랐어요. 이렇게 다시 돌아올줄은. 학교 생각만 하고 있었는데 박관호, 김남철 대표와 만나 게임 하나를 본 뒤 마음이 달라졌죠.”
그때 박관호 대표가 ‘어떻게 생각하냐’며 슬쩍 보여준 게임이 바이킹아일랜드. 그는 이 게임을 보고 다시 가슴이 뛰었다. 이걸 해봤으면 좋겠다는 생각을 했다. 그래서 박관호 대표를 찾아갔다. “이 게임 저한테 파세요. 제가 한번 해 볼랍니다.”
그 말을 들은 박관호 대표의 대답. “우리 회사로 들어와서 같이 하시죠.”
너무 좋은 게임으로 사업을 해보고 싶었던 남궁훈 대표는 위메이드엔터테인먼트로 들어갔다. 그가 위메이드로 들어가면서 한게임을 공동창업했던 김범수 카카오 이사회 의장의 카카오 관련 사업과 더욱 긴밀해지는 것도 그에게나 김범수 의장에게나, 새로운 시도다.
2009년 미국에 있을 때 NHN USA 대표에서 물러난 남궁훈 대표를 캘리포니아주 얼바인에서 만난 적이 있었다. 그때부터 그는 스마트폰 게임 얘기를 했었다. “스마트폰을 들고다니면 사람의 움직임을 그대로 따라가는 게임을 만들면 아주 큰 시장이 될 것 같습니다. 건강분야에 응용이 될 수도 있고, 언젠가 꼭 해보고 싶은데.”
진작부터 스마트폰 게임을 해보고 싶어하던 남궁훈 대표에게 (그걸 알았는지 모르겠지만) 박관호 대표가 게임을 슬쩍 보여준 타이밍이 아주 절묘했다. 꼭 한 번 해보고 싶다는 사람에게 너무 좋은 콘텐츠가 눈 앞에 나타났으니 어찌 그냥 지나칠 수 있겠는가.
“제 첫 직장이 삼성SDS였는데 그때는 PC통신 유니텔 천리안 하이텔 등이 경쟁했습니다. 하지만 그 경쟁은 곧 무의미해졌습니다. 인터넷이 나타나면서 PC통신 시장은 사라졌거든요. PC통신을 이용하던 사람들보다 훨씬 더 많은 네티즌들이 생겨났죠. 지금은 그 인터넷을 하던 사람들보다 훨씬 더 많은 스마트폰 이용자들이 나타나고 있습니다. 모바일 시장이 PC 인터넷 시장을 능가할 정도로 커질 것으로 예상할 수 있다는 겁니다.”
모바일 시대에 기회를 잡았다는 게 그에겐 중요한 것 같았다. 이미 PC 시대에 큰 수혜를 입었던 남궁훈 대표지만, 모바일 시대에 와서 다시 가능성을 발견했다. 행운아라고 할 수도 있다. 하지만 한 분야에 매진하는 그에게 기회가 계속 오는 것은 당연한 일인지도 모르겠다. 그에게 행운이라면, 그 기회가 엄청나게 크다는 것이다.
