On May 23, the German startup accelerator “Team Europe” announced the opening of an Asia-Pacific branch in Seoul. Following the launch of Germany’s “Rocket Internet” in 2010, the move is seen as an indication that overseas accelerators are paying attention to Korea’s entrepreneur boom.
Team Europe has invested in 15 companies from 10 countries including businesses in Europe, North America and Australia. If you take into account the other subsidiary investing companies, it is a medium-large sized accelerator with many affiliate companies.
Using a similar concept to Rocket Internet, which took copycat services and quickly made them into M&A material, Team Europe will start with online food ordering and purchasing services in Korea.
Team Europe’s Asia-Pacific branch will be run by branch manager, former NCsoft employee Ludolf Ebner-Chung and venture partner Kristoff Maier.
Team Europe’s Chung said, “We are interested in helping develop the talent in Korea…These talented people will be able to join with Team Europe’s capability and have an active business foundation.”
He added, “Team Europe is different in that we offer experiences from before the launch of a business, to forming the founders of a company and of course to success overseas….Rather than focusing on recreating successful businesses from the US, we are more focused on expanding the original business and creating a group of entrepreneurs.”

팀유럽은 유럽, 북미, 호주 등 10여개 국가에서 15개 회사에 투자하고 있으며 이들 투자회사의 계열사까지 더하면 관계사는 수십곳에 이르는 중대형 엑셀러레이터다.
카피 서비스로 기업을 빠르게 키워 M&A 재료로 사용한다는 논란을 일으키고 있는 로켓인터넷과 비슷한 컨셉트를 가진 엑셀러레이터인만큼 팀유럽은 한국에서 온라인 배달음식 주문 및 결제 서비스부터 시작한다.
팀유럽 아·태 지사는 엔씨소프트 출신의 루돌프 에브너-정 지사장과 벤처 파트너 역할을 할 크리스토프 마이어씨가 공동 운영한다.
팀유럽 정 지사장은 “국내 훌륭한 인재들을 육성하는데 큰 관심을 갖고 있다”며 “한국의 인재들이 팀유럽의 역량과 만나 활발하게 창업의 기반을 갖출 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
그는 또 “팀유럽은 창업 이전 단계부터 창업자 구성은 물론 해외 성공경험까지 제공한다는 게 차별점”이라며 “주로 미국에서 성공한 사업을 다른 국가에서 재현하는데 주력하는 경쟁사들과 달리, 본연의 사업을 확장하고 창업가 그룹을 구축하는데 더 주력하고 있다”고 소개했다. @
