Dorm-Surfing, how did it feel to be selected as the sixth winner of the praise relay?
We were recommended for the relay as we were about to start resting following our first summer camp season. In the interview it was a good chance to look back on our long schedule and gather our thoughts about Dorm-Surfing. Thanks a lot to all of those that supported us. Dorm-Surfing Praises Open Closet
Maybe it’s because I’m a university student but I feel very attached to Open Closet’s service. It’s a service that young people really need as they are busy getting their resume and other things in order and have no time to worry about clothing.
Open Closet?
Open Closet is a ‘suit sharing service’ where young job seekers can borrow the donated clothing of previous job seekers. If job seekers have upcoming job interviews and don’t want to deal with the cost of buying a suit and then getting it dry cleaned, they can easily borrow one from Open Closet.
How was Open Closet Started?
Last winter a business woman looked over her suits in her closet which she didn’t wear much anymore. The size no longer fit or fashion styles had changed so she hardly them it but the clothes were still smart and clean.
“They are just collecting dust here with me, but couldn’t they be needed by the many job seekers out there doing interview after interview?”
Other working men and women who liked the idea decided to come together with a common dream. They all had different jobs including a cellphone programmer, advertising copywriter and a franchise business manager. Nevertheless, with a passion to make a difference, Open Closet was born as the team worked over weekends and after getting off work.
What’s special about Open Closet?
Open closet is not just renting out clothes but it also shares “the story of clothes”. What this means is that when a suit is donated, the person donating can write about their story or give a message of support to the job seeker who will later wear it. Borrowers can then also send a message of thanks to the person who donated it.
Where does Open Closet go from here?
After six months of preparation, it has been two months since Open Closet opened. In that short space of time lots of workers, job seekers and media outlets have shown a lot of interest in Open Closet.
People from all walks of life have donated up to 150 suits including Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon and Dong-joon Lim from Tom’s Shoes. Despite the time of year being not a busy time for job interviews, around 30 young job seekers used the service and borrowed suits in July and August.
However, Open Closet is has just learned to walk. At the moment our site is bring upgraded by several developers who are offering their skills after being selected at Social Innovation Camp36. In particular we are focusing a story sharing system so workers and job seekers can share their stories.
What does Open Closet need now?
Firstly, we need lots of suit donations so we can rent out suits to young job seekers who are going for job interviews.

Secondly, we need a place where we can store and rent out suits. As we receive more donations of suits we have come upon the happy problem of not having enough space for all of the clothing. If we can get a more convenient location, then it will make it easier for job seekers to come and try on suits before renting them out.
Open Closet always thinks of the saying, “If you dream alone, it’s just a dream, but if you dream together, it becomes a reality.” At Open Closet our doors are always open and we support young people in this time of job searching and a struggling economy.

열린옷장은?
사회선배들의 잘 입지 않는 정장을 기증 받아 청년구직자들에게 면접용 의류를 대여해주는 ‘정장 공유 서비스’입니다. 취업 면접을 앞두고 다른 건 다 준비했는데 정장을 준비 못해 걱정인 청년구직자는 세탁비와 택배비 등 소정의 관리 유지비만 부담하시면 면접에 자신감을 불어 넣어줄 정장을 대여할 수 있습니다.
열린옷장은 어떻게 탄생했나요?
작년 겨울, 직장 생활을 꽤 오래한 한 여성멤버는 잘 입지 않는 정장들이 여러 벌 걸려있는 자신의 옷장을 보며 생각했습니다. 체형이 변해 사이즈가 맞지 않게 되었거나 유행이 지나 잘 입지는 않지만 아직 깨끗하고 당시에는 꽤 큰 맘 먹고 장만했던 정장들이었습니다.
그 아이디어에 공감했던 ‘세상을 바꾸는 소셜 디자이너’를 꿈꾸는 몇몇 직장인들이 한 자리에 모였습니다. 휴대폰 프로그래머, 광고 카피라이터, 디자이너, 프랜차이즈 비즈니스 매니저 등 직업은 다 달랐지만 좀 더 나은 세상을 만들고자 하는 마음으로 뭉쳐 주말과 퇴근 이후 시간을 쪼개어 열린옷장을 탄생시켰습니다.
열린옷장의 특징은?
열린옷장은 옷만이 아니라 ‘옷에 담긴 이야기’까지 공유합니다. 그래서 정장을 기증받을 때, 그 옷에 담긴 사연이나 그 옷을 입게 될 후배에게 보내는 응원 메시지를 함께 요청하고 있습니다. 또한 정장을 대여한 청년구직자의 감사 메시지는 옷을 기증한 사회 선배에게 다시 전달됩니다. 한 벌의 옷을 매개체로 선배와 후배가 희망의 가치를 주고 받을 수 있는 기회가 만들어 집니다. 받는 사람의 기쁨만큼 주는 사람의 기쁨도 크다는 것, 경험해 보신 분들은 아실텐데요. 지금 옷장을 활짝 열어 마음을 나눠보시는 것은 어떨까요?
현재 그리고 앞으로의 열린옷장 행보는?
6개월간의 준비기간을 거쳐 열린옷장 홈페이지(www.theopencloset.net)가 오픈 한지 이제 2달여가 되었습니다. 너무나 감사하게도 그 짧은 기간 동안 수많은 사회선배들과 청년구직자들, 그리고 언론과 미디어에서 저희 열린옷장에 뜨거운 관심과 격려를 보내주고 계십니다. 각계 각층의 사회선배님들이 (탐스슈즈 임동준 대표, 박원순 서울시장, 방송인 김미화, 김태진 등) 150여 벌의 소중한 정장을 기증해주셨습니다. 7,8월 취업 비수기에도 불구하고 30여분의 청년구직자 여러분이 열린옷장의 정장을 대여해 입어주셨습니다.
그러나 열린옷장은 이제 막 걸음마를 뗀 아이나 마찬가지입니다. 현재는 Social Innovation Camp36 에 아이디어가 채택되어 여러 전문가 분들의 재능기부를 통해 홈페이지 업그레이드 작업을 진행하고 있습니다. 특히 이야기 공유 시스템 구축에 힘을 기울이고 있습니다. 선배와 후배가 희망의 이야기를 마음껏 나눌 수 있는 열린옷장의 모습을 기대해주세요!

여름시즌 청춘숙소 1호점을 마치고 잠시 휴면기에 들어갈 무렵 칭찬릴레이 추천을 받았습니다. 인터뷰를 작성하면서 이번 여름의 기나긴 여정을 되돌아보고 돔서핑에 대한 복잡했던 생각들을 정리할 수 있었던 좋은 기회였습니다. 사랑해주시고 응원해주시는 많은 분들께 감사드립니다. 칭찬해주신 집밥과 좋은 기회를 마련해주신 벤처스퀘어와 다음 칭찬을 받으실 열린옷장 분들께 모두 감사합니다.
