Today, Uber launched a branch of it’s ride-demand service in Seoul. UberTAXI allows any one in Seoul to call for Uber-affiliated cab drivers for rides via the Uber app powered by Uber Technologies, Inc.
Like its other limousine services, UberTAXI aims to bring the convenience of on-demand rides like Uber and UberX by partnering with registered cab drivers to take passengers around Seoul. Taxi drivers will utilize the Uber app to receive and accept requests for rides or receive mobile devices from Uber. The service will work the same as Uber in that information will be shared in advance to both the driver and passenger. However, payment must be done between driver and passenger outside the app.
Though taxi fares will still remain the same, Uber will incentivize their service for taxi drivers by paying them an extra 2,000 KRW bonus per ride.
Despite receiving much resistance from the Seoul city government, Uber continues to push into the Korean market as it expands globally across Europe and Asia. UberTAXI has already launched in London and Singapore.
