위기에서 희망을 구조하는 세계적 인도주의 기구인 국제구조위원회(International Rescue Committee: IRC, 한국 대표 이은영)는 미국 경제 전문지 패스트컴퍼니(Fast Company)가 지난 18일(현지 시간) 발표한 ‘2025년 세계에서 가장 혁신적인 기업(World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2025)’ 비영리 부문에 선정됐다.
패스트컴퍼니는 매년 AI, 지속가능성, 교육, 의료, 기후 대응 등 58개 부문에서 가장 혁신적인 성과를 보인 기업을 선정해 ‘세계에서 가장 혁신적인 기업’ 리스트를 발표하고 있으며, 올해는 609개 기업이 포함됐다. 이 중 국제구조위원회는 인도주의 기구 중에서 가장 높은 순위를 기록했으며 비영리 부문에서는 6위에 선정돼 오픈AI, 엔비디아, 듀오링고 등 글로벌 혁신 기업들과 함께 이름을 올렸다.
패스트컴퍼니는 국제구조위원회가 구글과 협력해 개발한 AI 및 데이터 기반 ‘기후 위기 사전적 대응 프로그램(Anticipatory Action Program)’을 통해 나이지리아 홍수 피해 지역에 대한 인도적 지원의 효율성과 효과성을 극대화한 점을 높이 평가했다. 실제로 국제구조위원회는 전 세계 인도적 지원 예산의 3%만을 차지하면서도, 인도적 지원의 효율성을 분석하는 연구의 25%, 지원의 실질적 영향을 평가하는 연구의 33%를 수행하고 있다. 이처럼 과학적 연구와 데이터를 기반으로 최적의 인도적 지원 방안을 모색하며, 글로벌 표준을 구축하는 데 앞장서고 있다.
이번에 주목받은 기후 위기 사전적 대응 프로그램 외에도, 국제구조위원회는 AI 및 첨단 기술을 활용해 다양한 혁신적 인도주의 솔루션을 제공하고 있다. 대표적인 프로그램으로는 ▲강제 이주민에게 안전한 피난 경로, 법적 지원, 의료 서비스 등 신뢰할 수 있는 정보를 실시간 제공하는 AI 기반 디지털 지원 플랫폼 ‘사인포스트(Signpost)’ ▲미국 내 난민들에게 주거, 일자리, 교육 정보 등을 제공하여 정착을 지원하는 원격 시스템 ‘VR&P(Virtual Reception and Placement)’ ▲위기 지역의 학생들에게 개인 맞춤형 학습 기회를 제공하는 AI 교육 챗봇 ‘aprendIA’ ▲인도적 지원 프로그램이 얼마나 효과적인지 비용 대비 성과를 분석할 수 있도록 돕는 솔루션 ‘Dioptra’ 등이 있다.
국제구조위원회의 연구·혁신 최고책임자이자 자체 연구소 에어벨 임팩트랩의 공동 설립자인 지니 애넌(Jeannie Annan) 박사는 “인도적 지원의 수요는 급증하는 반면 지원 예산은 감소하고 있는 상황에서 이제 혁신은 선택이 아니라 필수”라며, “국제구조위원회는 최첨단 기술을 활용해 보다 효과적이고 효율적인 방식으로 인도적 지원을 제공하는 데 전념하고 있으며, 이 같은 노력을 인정받게 되어 영광”이라고 말했다.
이은영 국제구조위원회 한국 대표는 “이번 선정은 미국의 해외 원조 중단 등 국제 정세가 급변하는 가운데 인도적 지원에서도 데이터와 AI를 활용한 혁신적 접근 방식이 더욱 중요해지고 있음을 보여준다”며 “앞으로도 기술력을 가진 기업, 정부기관, 연구소 등과 협력해 기술 기반 인도적 지원 솔루션을 고도화하고, 제한된 예산 속에서도 더 많은 이들에게 실질적인 도움을 제공할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 전했다.
한편 국제구조위원회는 앞서 패스트컴퍼니가 선정한 ‘2024 디자인 혁신상(2024 Innovation by Design Awards)’에서 세사미 워크샵(Sesame Workshop)과 협력한 유아 지원 교육 프로그램 ‘아할란 심심(Ahlan Simsim)’으로 유럽, 중동 및 아프리카 부문 최우수 디자인상을 수상한 바 있다. 2018년 시작된 이 프로그램은 위기에 처한 중동 지역 어린이들에게 영유아 발달과 놀이 학습을 제공해오고 있으며, 현재까지 2,900만 명의 어린이가 세사미 스트리트의 아랍어 버전을 통해 공포와 같은 감정 조절법을 학습했다. 이는 인도주의 역사상 가장 큰 유아 지원 교육 프로그램 중 하나로 평가되며, 조기 학습 기회 확대 및 교육 격차 해소에 기여하고 있다.

International Rescue Committee Named 'World's Most Innovative Companies 2025'
The International Rescue Committee (IRC, Korean representative Eun-young Lee), a global humanitarian organization that rescues hope in times of crisis, was selected in the non-profit category as one of the 'World's Most Innovative Companies of 2025' announced by the American economic magazine Fast Company on the 18th (local time).
Fast Company annually publishes a list of the 'World's Most Innovative Companies', selecting companies that have shown the most innovative performance in 58 sectors, including AI, sustainability, education, healthcare, and climate response. This year, 609 companies were included. Among them, the International Rescue Committee ranked highest among humanitarian organizations and was ranked 6th in the non-profit sector, along with global innovative companies such as OpenAI, Nvidia, and Duolingo.
Fast Company highly praised the International Rescue Committee for maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of humanitarian aid to flood-stricken areas in Nigeria through the AI and data-based 'Anticipatory Action Program' developed in collaboration with Google. In fact, the International Rescue Committee accounts for only 3% of the global humanitarian aid budget, but conducts 25% of research analyzing the effectiveness of humanitarian aid and 33% of research evaluating the actual impact of aid. In this way, it is seeking the optimal humanitarian aid method based on scientific research and data, and is taking the lead in establishing global standards.
In addition to the climate crisis preemptive response program that has recently drawn attention, the International Rescue Committee is providing various innovative humanitarian solutions using AI and cutting-edge technologies. “With growing needs and shrinking budgets for humanitarian assistance, innovation is no longer an option but a necessity,” said Dr. Jeannie Annan, the International Rescue Committee’s Chief Research and Innovation Officer and co-founder of its research lab, Airbell Impact Lab. “The International Rescue Committee is committed to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to deliver humanitarian assistance in more effective and efficient ways, and we are honored to be recognized for this effort.”
Eunyoung Lee, Korea representative of the International Rescue Committee, said, “This selection shows that innovative approaches using data and AI are becoming more important in humanitarian aid amid rapidly changing international situations, including the US suspension of foreign aid.” She added, “We will continue to work with companies, government agencies, and research institutes with technological capabilities to advance technology-based humanitarian aid solutions and do our best to provide practical assistance to more people even within a limited budget.”
Meanwhile, the International Rescue Committee previously won the Best Design Award in the Europe, Middle East and Africa category at the '2024 Innovation by Design Awards' selected by Fast Company for the early childhood education program 'Ahlan Simsim' in collaboration with Sesame Workshop. The program, which began in 2018, has been providing early childhood development and playful learning to children in the Middle East at risk, and to date, 29 million children have learned how to regulate emotions such as fear through the Arabic version of Sesame Street. This is evaluated as one of the largest early childhood education programs in humanitarian history, contributing to expanding early learning opportunities and eliminating education gaps.

L'International Rescue Committee (IRC, représentant coréen Eun-young Lee), une organisation humanitaire mondiale qui sauve l'espoir en temps de crise, a été sélectionnée dans la catégorie à but non lucratif comme l'une des « entreprises les plus innovantes au monde de 2025 » annoncée par le magazine économique américain Fast Company le 18 (heure locale).
Fast Company publie chaque année un classement des « entreprises les plus innovantes au monde », sélectionnant les entreprises les plus innovantes dans 58 secteurs, dont l'IA, le développement durable, l'éducation, la santé et la lutte contre le changement climatique. Cette année, 609 entreprises ont été sélectionnées. Parmi eux, l'International Rescue Committee s'est classé au premier rang parmi les organisations humanitaires et au sixième rang dans le secteur à but non lucratif, rejoignant ainsi des entreprises innovantes mondiales telles qu'OpenAI, NVIDIA et Duolingo.
