다시 말씀드리지만 이들에게 야구는 하나의 스포츠가 아니라 거의 인생에 중요한 한 부분입니다. 어메리칸 패스트타임… 종교나 같은 것입니다.
미국인이나 미국에서 살고 계신 분은 다른 것은 몰라도 야구에 관한 이야기만 하시더라도 아이스 브레이킹은 물론 친한 친구들을 만드실 수 있습니다. 야구에 어느 정도나 알아야 할까요? 아니 어떤 주제로 어느 정도 이야기해야 대화가 될까요?
뉴욕취업 책에도 제가 야구에 대해서 많이 알아야 한다고 말씀드렸습니다. 30개 구단의 이름부터 역사 전통에 관해서는 알아주셔야 하는데요. 거기에 상당한 지식을 가지고 있으면 도움이 됩니다. 실제 대화 보여드리겠습니다.
아이스 브레이킹 정도가 아닌 실제로 이들과 대화 하려면 이정도만 해주시면 됩니다. 물론 아이스 브레이킹 차원이면 이 것 보다는 훨씬 심플하지요.
이정도 지식은 배우려고 해서 되는 게 아니라 지속적인 관심을 가지고 꾸준히 공부해야 합니다. 아이스 브레이킹이건 getting along with people이건 잠깐 써먹으려고 잔머리 쓰면 들통이 나기에…
제 동료랑 하던 이야기를 그대로 올립니다. 개막전 전날 대화였습니다.
August : hey are you going to the game tomorrow?
Filldream : Oh~I wish I could. Did you get the ticket?
August : And, I got the reservation at the Yankees steakhouse too.
Filldream : Man, you are living the dream.
August : I am taking my father as well.
Filldream : That’s so nice of you. But, what are we gonna do with the pitching rotation?
Specially, we don’t have a solid left hander other than C.C after my boy Pettite
retired
August : We are gonna miss him a lot. Pettite contributed a lot to the team
Filldream : You know how Joe Torre was very loyal to him specially after his performance
in Game 5 of 1996 World Series
August : The best pitching match up of the Series. It was Smoltz versus Pettite.
Filldream : Do you remember that play when Pettite threw out Smoltz at third and got
the double play on Chipper Jones.
August : Yes Indeed. You remember how Pettite couldn’t even watch the game
when Wetteland came to save the game?
Filldream : It really was a nail-biter. I thought I had a heart attack when Luis Polonia hit that
line driver to right field. Paul O’neill was playing on a bad knee and you could see
he was hurting. And, do you recall that it was the first base coach Jose Cardinals
who moved Paul O’neill towards the center because Polonia kept fouling
the pitches straight back?
August : Yes. I thought the Braves were gonna win. It was a great series. But, for the current
Yankees, Burnett’s gotta pitch better and we should hope that Freddy Garcia
pitches like old himself.
Filldream : I still think we should have gotten Cliff Lee. Now the Phillies have the best pitching
and offense in baseball.
August : Well, let the Mightly Mets handle them
Filldream : But the problem with the Mets now is that the owners are faced with the Madoff
litigation and they always find their way to underperform the little expectation
we have on them.
August : The Mets? I thought we had only one major league baseball team in New YorK
hahaha. And, guess what. I saw Tino Martinez on the street the other day?
Filldream : Is that right? What is he doing in New York. Anyway, Tino was such a consistent
player that played in the most memorable Yankees games in modern times
August : You mean when he was with Seattle as well.?
Filldream : Yes. I think that ALCS in 1995 was the best series after the wild card was
introduced
August : It was Griffey, Buner, Randy Johnson, and Martinez boys
Filldream : The Yankees should have won that series for Don Mattingly.
I like baseball 하고 끝나면 별로 인정을 안 해줍니다. 특히나 전문 직종을 가지고 있는 사람들은 야구도 전문적으로 분석을 하기에 I like baseball이라고 말하고 나면 얼마 안가서 대화가 끝납니다.
역사상 중요한 게임들, 왜 양키구장에는 좌완투수가 필요한가, 어떤 경기에 어떤 일이 있었나에 관한 이야기, 지형적 특성, 어느 구장에 어느 음식이 많있는지, 그 팀의 마이너 리그 팀이 어디 있는지, 스프링트레이닝은 어디에서 하는지, 까지 “전체적인 문화적” 이해까지 해야 진정한 스몰토크가 대화가 되는 것 입니다. 겨우 레이디 가가 노래 한 두곡 안다고 해서 되는 게 아니란 말씀을 강조 해 드리고 싶습니다. 미국에서 일하시는 분들, 아님 출장오시는 분들, 아님 미국계 회사에 계시는 분들은 이런 이야기를 많이 나누시면 됩니다.
야구가 popular하지 않은 유럽이나 oceania에 계신 분들은 축구나 크리켓, 럭비 이야기를 하면 되겠지요?
축구도 그냥 I like Manchester United가 아닌… 예를 들자면 Tottenham과 Real Madrid 경기에서 Gareth Bale을 제대로 활용하지 못 한 이유라던지 무리뇨 감독이 토트넘이 공을 잡자마자 high pitch에서 어떻게 맨마킹을 했는지, Ramos가 왜 활발한 overlapping을 안 들어갔는지 까지 이야기를 해주시는 게 좋습니다.
어떻게 보면 스몰토크건 친구가 안 생기는 것이건 대화가 잘 안되는 이유는 그만큼 나눌 만한 관심사가 없어서가 아닐까 합니다. 맨날 한국 막장 드라마만 보면서 왜 이들과 교류할 것이 없는 이유를 아시겠지요? (물론 좋은 드라마도 있습니다~)
다시 말씀 드리지만 관심 끌으라고 스포츠 관전을 하라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 관심사를 많이 가지고 공유를 하면 전 세계 누구하고도 친구가 될수 있다는 뜻입니다. 관심 끌라고 끼적끼적 대는 것..이들이 더 잘 압니다. 그럼 pompous라는 소리 듣습니다.
관심사 공유… 문화적 교류가 되어야 인간 대 인간인 교류가 됩니다. 나는 어느정도나 다른 문화권 사람들과 공유 할 수 있나 에 관한 생각 해 보시기 바랍니다. 물론 영어 수준을 Where is Seoul Station? Go Straight 차원에서 머물게 하시려는 분들도 계시지만 “이들과 관심사를 공유하며 대화를 나눌수 있는 차원” 에 관한 이야기 입니다.
문화적으로 소통을 할 수 있는 사람이 비즈니스에 관한 소통도 더 잘 할 수 있다고 생각합니다.
