Transbox is a new privacy solution that lets you share sensitive information anywhere online without having to worry about anyone else seeing it. Released on Android yesterday, the service offers end-to-end encryption for sharing data privately with others.
The app encrypts data into a 24 character code which can only be unlocked with a key from the original user. While we wouldn’t recommend making it a habit, it essentially means that encrypted messages can be posted in unsecure online spaces without too much worry.
Transbox is based on PGP (pretty good privacy), an encryption method which uses several algorithms to share data safely. Public encryption keys are directly connected to a user’s account, which means they select and manage who they want viewing their data. Even if the encrypted data has already been shared with a trusted friend, the owner can still kill it at anytime so it can no longer be viewed.
Files can be encrypted too – meaning that you could potentially disable an email attachment that you sent out by accident. Information about when data was accessed and how many times, can also be viewed.
Unlike other privacy focused apps, Transbox encourages it users to send out encrypted data via other platforms, such as messaging apps or social media – and integrates into other apps with its ‘EasyBox’ feature.
Transbox was founded in mid-2015 and has been involved in multiple startup support programs over that time. After receiving an award at the K-Global Startup event in 2015, the company was selected for the Born2Global Accelerator Program last year – and was most recently picked as one of 300 startups for a government-sponsored program.
“Transbox is currently available on Android, with an iOS version due out next month,” said CEO Dohyung Kim. “When the PC version is released this year, small-sized companies will be able to have a data protection solution across PC and mobile for less than 100,000 won (USD $87) a year.”
According to the company, the mobile version of Transbox is free to use, while the PC version will be a paid platform targeted at businesses. Business customers will also get extra features to manage data across organizations.
Transbox has plans to take the service global and signed an MOU with US security company Beyond Security last October with the goal of tapping the US market.
