Korean startup TwoEyesTech plans to make creating high-quality VR and 3D videos easier and more accessible with its new camera TwoEyes VR.
The camera, which has 360-degree, 3D and 4K capabilities, just blasted through its $40,000 Kickstarter campaign target in two days, with less than 200 backers.
The amazing device is actually four cameras with 180-degree fisheye lenses, allowing different modes of shooting. Holding the TwoEyes VR vertically puts it in “one eye mode” and uses two cameras for basic 360 images and video, similar to other cameras on the market.
Hold it horizontally, and you activate “two eyes mode”. This mode uses all four cameras, as well as a built-in gyro sensor, to give a more realistic 360 degree shooting experience.
TwoEyes VR uses stereoscopic technology designed to mimic what the human eyes see by accounting for two different lines of sight. A special algorithm also calculates the distance of separation between the eyes, known as the parallax, giving a more genuine viewing experience. The company claims on its website that it’s the first camera equipped with a lens that corresponds to each eye.
With years in the making, TwoEyes VR comes with a 4K processor, 1GB RAM, and 128GB internal memory. It has wifi and Bluetooth capability, meaning you can stream directly to sites that support live 360 video such as Facebook and YouTube. Photos and video can also be taken through the app which displays front and rear camera views in real-time.
Despite all the technology crammed into the TwoEyes VR, it still fits in the palm of your hand and weighs just 220 grams. TwoEyesTech recently showcased the new camera at CES 2017, where it received a lot of interest.
“Regular consumers also want to experience new ideas and technology in the field of virtual reality,” said TwoEyesTech CEO HunJoo Song. “With TwoEye VR anyone can create high-quality 360 video content easily and at a reasonable price.”
To get your hands on one, you’ll need to back the crowdfunding campaign with at least US$239, though there are still some discounted earlybird packs left. The product is scheduled to go into production in July and shipped to customers in August. With 37 days still left in the campaign and having been selected for Kickstarter’s “Projects We Love”, it will certainly be a project to watch closely.
